National Surveyors Week Spotlight | Alex Jakubowski | Survey Technician

How many years of experience do you have as a surveyor?

I have 3 years of experience during college for a small family operations and 2 years of experience with Sebago Technics.

When/how did you discover that you wanted to become a surveyor?

When I was in high school, I knew I wanted a career that would allow me to be outdoors as much as possible. Math was always my favorite subject, so being able to do computations while in different environments and settings was very enticing to me.

What do you like most about the work you do?

I enjoy changing jobsites and tasks that are needed to be done on a daily basis.

Describe a typical (or ideal) work day in the life of being a surveyor.

My ideal work day would be a large wooded boundary survey that involves finding original monumentation from the division of the original town and capturing enough evidence to reproduce the intent of the original division.

What is your favorite/most notable project and why?

My favorite project I have been a part of so far at Sebago is the layout of the new Windham Correctional Center. This jobsite has many interesting and challenging obstacles with it being next to and in an active prison. The layout involves multiple different buildings being constructed at the same time, as well as different contractors all utilizing and requesting different layouts.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about pursuing a career in surveying?

My advice would be to find a surveyor in your area and ask to shadow them for a day or two. This will allow you to get a good understanding of what a typical day looks like for a surveyor and what the job tasks entail.
