Summer Intern Spotlight | Vinh Lam

Please join us in welcoming Vinh Lam to the Sebago team, as one of our summer interns within our Transportation Group. Vinh is from Sanford, Maine and is attending the University of Maine in pursuit of a degree in Civil Engineering, intending to become a Transportation Engineer (focused on traffic).  He has performed some great traffic signal analyses for his hometown and interned with the Sanford Public Works Department. We are so excited to work with a diverse and innovative group of interns this summer and can’t wait to see all of their progress and achievements!

Where do you go to school?

University of Maine (Orono, ME).

What are you studying and why did you choose this major?

I am currently studying Civil Engineering, specifically in the Transportation field. I want to use my knowledge to find solutions to the traffic and transportation problems that plague our area.

What has been your favorite class so far and why?

Transportation Engineering (CIE225) – it was a great introduction to what Transportation Engineering is and what I would be diving into in this field in the near future.

Favorite place(s) to go in Maine?

I like going to Portland, as well as going to the beaches in Kennebunkport, Wells, and York. In the summer, I like to bike the Eastern Trail, as well as around Wells and York beaches. The Fryeburg Fair in Fryeburg, ME is my favorite attraction in the Fall.

What three traits define you?

Observant, ambitious, and curious.

What are your hobbies?

Travelling (and going on long road trips), cycling (both road and off-road), working on computer hardware and software, basketball (currently manage for the UMaine team) and baseball.

Do you have a hidden talent? If so, tell us about it

I have been managing basketball (stats, travel, technology, etc.) for 8 years and counting now – as of this day, I currently manage the University of Maine men’s basketball team.

Where would you like to go on a dream vacation?

I’ve always wanted to be able to explore outside the United States, probably somewhere in Europe, or maybe somewhere in SE Asia (Japan and Vietnam).

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

As of 2021-06-15 I have travelled 835.1 km of Interstate 95 from Howland, ME to Newark, NJ. Once I get the last 142 km completed in Maine, I can finally officially say I have traveled all 909.6 km of Interstate 95 in New England.

What are your favorite ways to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family?

Pretty much anything outside, mostly in the form of road trips, and exploring the great outdoors, whether urban or rural. Pretty much wherever the open road takes us.

What inspired you to intern with Sebago Technics?

My interest in traffic signals (partially with Flashing Yellow Arrows) and phasing, as well as highway design since 2005, has led me to pursue and explore the inner workings of transportation engineering.

What do you look forward to in your career?

I look forwards to continue learning about transportation (and other engineering fields) and using my knowledge to find solutions to the traffic and transportation problems today and improve my community.
