Employee-Owner Spotlight: Ben Viola, Senior Project Engineer

Ben ViolaWe are pleased to announce that Ben Viola, P.E., joins Sebago Technics as a Senior Project Engineer. Mr. Viola graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Civil Engineering and from Husson College with a Masters in Business. He recently retired from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection after 32 years of service. At Sebago, he will assist in the development, analysis and review of stormwater management designs and applications.

What is your role at Sebago Technics?

Civil Engineer

What is your favorite part of the type of work that you do?

Learning something new every day.   I enjoy the variety of projects.

How did you choose this career path?

After working as a construction worker for a number of years I decided to go to college and study engineering.

What places have you lived in throughout your life?

In the United States: Greenville, PA; New Castle, DE; Center, ND; Fort Dix, NJ; Fort Leonard Wood, MO; Plainfield, IL.; South Portland and Scarborough ME

Outside of the United States: Germany; South Africa; Saudi Arabia

Before working at Sebago, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

During breaks in college I worked for Manpower. Manpower was a company that provided temporary workers. I could be hired for a day or a week.  When I went to work in the morning I never knew what type of work I would be doing.

What three traits define you? 

  1. Honest
  2. Reliable
  3. Friendly

What are your hobbies outside the office?

Fitness – I enjoy staying healthy. Whether it be walking, biking, or working out at the gym.

Community Involvement – I have been a trustee to the Scarborough Sanitary District for the last 20 years.

If you had to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Chicken dinner cooked in a terracotta clay cooker.

Top three life highlights?

  1. Serving in the military.
  2. Graduating from College.
  3. Marriage and Family.

If you were an animal what would you be?

I would be a cat.  They have nine lives.

Where would you like to go on a dream vacation?

My dream vacation would be snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef.

What is the best concert you attended?

Paul McCartney, I think it was 1978 at the Boston Garden.

What are you excited about at Sebago?

Starting a new journey.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.  

I was a journeyman ironworker.

What do you like most about working at Sebago Technics?

The people.

Favorite place(s) to go in Maine?

Sebago Lake and Acadia National Park.
