project Details

Expanding a significant cultural space

The expansion will accommodate 615 in-ground burial plots and up to 100 cremains plots. The project also reserves space for future columbarium niche walls to increase overall capacity and respond to burial trends. Shade and flowering trees will be planted informally throughout the space in keeping with adjacent design patterns and with an awareness of maintenance issues. A mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees will also provide buffering from adjacent residential homes and Stevens Avenue.

The cemetery has long been a significant open space feature in Portland, attracting walkers, bikers, and bird watchers. As such, the expansion has also been designed to accommodate continued passive and contemplative use within the Deering Center neighborhood.
