Project overview

This documentation project, launched in February 2025, focuses on the last functioning smoked herring facility in the United States before its closure in 1991. Named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, this critical piece of Downeast Maine’s cultural heritage faces ongoing threats from fierce storms and relentless 25-foot daily tides in the Lubec Narrows.

Preserving historic cultural heritage

Our Survey-Geomatics team deployed advanced terrestrial RTC360 and BLK2GO SLAM scanners to capture incredibly detailed interior and exterior scans of all five remaining wooden structures. Four of these historic buildings stand precariously on pilings above the powerful Lubec Narrows, where dramatic tidal forces separate Maine from Campobello Island, New Brunswick. Our technical team transformed the raw scan data into a geographically referenced point cloud of the entire site, creating a digital foundation for preservation efforts. From this dataset, we developed detailed 3D models of the South Smokehouse and Sawdust Shed, with plans to model the remaining structures as additional funding becomes available.

This project exemplifies our commitment to applying advanced technology to solve complex preservation challenges while safeguarding what matters most to Maine communities. The digital documentation serves as both a research tool and permanent record of these irreplaceable structures, which have already seen several original buildings and the connecting wharf completely destroyed by natural forces. Through this collaboration, we’re honored to help preserve this remarkable testament to America’s maritime industrial history against the inevitable forces of time and nature, ensuring future generations can access and study this unique piece of cultural heritage.
