Project overview
This roadway, which serves both year-round and seasonal homes along the Androscoggin River and Merrymeeting Bay, has experienced increasing vulnerability to flooding and erosion due to heavy precipitation events and high tides.

Collaborative resilience planning
Our approach began with a detailed existing conditions survey as this roadway had never been formally surveyed. This foundational step documented the right-of-way, property boundaries, topography, and existing infrastructure conditions. Following the survey, our multi-disciplinary team conducted a thorough site assessment to characterize the road’s vulnerabilities, focusing on two primary areas of concern: tidal flooding at a wetland crossing, and shoreline erosion threatening sections of the road closest to the riverbank.
Using this assessment, we developed and evaluated multiple design alternatives, considering a spectrum of solutions ranging from nature-based approaches to traditional engineering methods, or potentially hybrid solutions that combine multiple strategies.
The project included robust stakeholder engagement, with public meetings to gather input on proposed solutions and present the final design. The culmination of this work, completed in 2025, was a Project Design Memorandum with preliminary design plans, calculations, and cost estimates that can be leveraged for future funding applications.
