Project overview

Initially, Sebago provided the existing conditions survey of the CCAC project area, as well as for the new recreational fields that preceded the CCAC project. These survey services extended into construction, with Sebago providing laser-scanned images of the project components throughout construction to verify the installation was being completed with specified tolerances.

Comprehensive engineering for Colby College

Sebago also provided utility and drainage system design with the demolition of the existing infrastructure being replaced with an entirely new utility supporting system of sanitary sewer, domestic and fire suppression, water, electrical, gas, and communications with the expanded capacity to serve the new CCAC facility. Sebago also designed a Stormwater Management Plan with various techniques to treat the stormwater runoff from the site for quality and quantity. These techniques included stone berms to act in concert with receiving wooded buffers, an underground chamber storage and sand filter system located under a parking lot area, and three innovatively designed meadow basins that blend in with the overall meadow landscape developed within the CCAC project area.

In developing the Stormwater Management Plan, Sebago was able to produce a stormwater design that exceeded the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Chapter 500 redevelopment permitting requirements as part of our overall site civil engineering services in addressing the DEP Site Location of Development Act permit amendment and local permitting needs. Sebago was also instrumental in assisting Colby College in receiving a Platinum LEED Certification, particularly with our integral support under the Rainwater Management category within the Sustainable Sites initiative. In addition, we also provided essential stormwater and site design support which assisted in Colby College being awarded a SITES Gold Certification from the Green Building Council — the first project in Maine and New England to achieve that status. Sebago also assisted the project landscape architect with grading and surface finish design components so that the project could effectively meld the mass of the building structure within the surrounding terrain to become a harmonious addition to this classic New England college setting.

Throughout the project’s construction, Sebago worked collaboratively with the project team to provide construction support. This support included reviewing submittals and shop drawings, responding to questions from the contractors to address construction issues, participating in construction meetings, visiting the site, and preparing follow-up observation field reports.
