Employee-Owner Spotlight | Rose Walter | CAD Technician

We are excited to announce that Rose Walter has officially joined Sebago Technics as a full-time CAD Technician.

Rose has been a valuable part of our team since last year, working part-time as a Sebago Technics representative in a remote CAD position for one of our clients. We’re thrilled to have her bring her skills and dedication to our South Portland office.

Originally from the Brunswick area, Rose now resides in Saco and recently completed her degree in Engineering Design Technology at Southern Maine Community College. We’re confident that her background and passion for design will be a tremendous asset to our team.

Please join us in welcoming Rose to her new role!

Where did you grow up and what other places have you lived in throughout your life?

Most recently I moved back to Maine from Washington, D.C. My parents live in Maine, and I went to middle and high school in Brunswick. I was born in San Diego, CA, and I lived there for several years after high school as well.

Favorite place(s) to go in Maine?

I grew up going to Sewall Pond in Arrowsic and Popham State Park. They continue to be favorites of mine along with the beaches and parks that are closer to me in Saco.

What was your very first job, and what did you learn from it?

My first job was as a paper delivery person. I was 14 years old and quickly learned that it is important to be mindful of your commute when entering a new role. I had to ride my bike for an hour to do around ten minutes of work every day.

What is your favorite part of the type of work that you do?

I really enjoy cleaning up drawings that come to me with lots of edits. It can be very satisfying to organize and prune out clutter.

What was your journey like to get where you are?

Before I got into computer assisted drafting, I owned a mobile tailoring business in Washington, D.C. When I moved up to Maine in 2022, I knew I was interested in taking a step away from the hands-on implementation of clothing construction. I pivoted into drafting and started taking classes at SMCC in fall of 2022 for engineering and architectural design. While I took classes, I worked as a tailor and clothing designer in Saco. In Dec of 2023 I started at Sebago as a contractor for Texas Instruments. I have really enjoyed my past six months getting to use what I have been studying and learning on the job.

What are your hobbies outside the office?

I am a true jack of all trades (master of none). I enjoy volleyball, pickleball, pottery, sewing, gardening, and thrifting to name a few. I am always down to try something new, so I am always picking up new hobbies.

What inspired you to work for Sebago Technics?

I focused my job search on companies that had a team that reflected the demographics in Maine. I appreciate the staff-centric ethos and personal accountability that I have seen from everyone on staff.

Favorite thing to do in Maine?

I love discovering hidden gems. There are so many places to hike and swim in Maine and I try to check out somewhere new whenever I can.

If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Burritos – there are endless fillings to choose from and they contain all the food groups!

Top three life highlights?

I did a solo bike trip from Brunswick to Philadelphia that was incredible. I have a dog, Daisy. The day I brought her home was definitely a highlight. Lastly, the first time I traveled outside the Americas I went to Spain and Portugal with some friends and had a great time.

Do you have a hidden talent? If so, tell us about it!

I don’t know about hidden talent, but my previous career was in clothing alteration and design. I know all about how items are made and fit and how to identify quality pieces.

If you were an animal what would you be and why?

I would be a seal. They spend all their time swimming and sunbathing.

Where would you like to go on a dream vacation?

My oldest brother lives in Japan and I would love to visit him someday.

Favorite Holiday and why?

Thanksgiving has to be my favorite holiday. I have started hosting for my family and I love having everyone over to celebrate with great food.

What is the best concert you attended?

Lake Street Dive. They are a pop group with heavy influence from jazz and soul music. I went to their concert at Thompson’s point in 2022 with my sisters and we all had a great time.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

I used to ride my bicycle as my only mode of transportation and averaged 30+ miles every day for years.

What are your favorite ways to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family?

I’m a big fan of the water- ocean, lakes, rivers, puddles – I love them all. I like to go swimming, canoeing and paddleboarding after work and on the weekends when the weather allows. This summer I’m working to train my dog to stay in the canoe instead of continually jumping out and back in.

When you think about working at Sebago Technics, what makes you proudest or most excited?

I am happy to be working for a company that is focused locally. I love pulling up a plan and seeing that it is in my community and often somewhere I have spent time personally.
